The Bellows Falls Waypoint Center was opened in 2003, as a 'waypoint community center' for visitors to the Greater Falls region of Rockingham, Westminster, Putney, Springfield, Vermont and Walpole and Charlestown, New Hampshire. The Bellows Falls Waypoint Visitor Center, is adjacent to the Bellows Falls Canal ('first' chartered canal in the United State and near the Bellows Falls Train Station is owned and managed by the Town of Rockingham. The designated Byway routes join Route 5 in Bellows Falls, Vermont, Route 12 and Route 12A in New Hampshire.
Dan Scully's award winning design combined the measurements of the original Arch Bridge plans to pay homage to what was at one time, "the longest arch bridge in the U.S." The project is outlined here.
The arch bridge connected North Walpole, NH to Bellows Falls, VT from 1905 to 1982, and though it was replaced with what Christian Science Monitor said was a four-span girder bridge "of no particular architectural significance", locals still refer to it as the Arch Bridge.
Scully Architects founded in 1983, is very active in the Monadnock region and community of Keene, New Hampshire. Awards for the Design include:
- 2006 AIA/New Hampshire, Design Excellence, Bellows Falls Waypoint Center
- 2004 AIA/NE Excellence in Architecture, Citation for Bellows Falls Waypoint Center
- 2004 Vermont Preservation Trust Award, Bellows Falls Waypoint Center
- 2002 Vermont Open Space Awards Program winner, Bellows Falls Waypoint Center
"Dan finds a visually strong modern architectural irony, and zing, in an inventive juxtaposition of a combination of historical context and a future sustainable vision, in the individual scale service of the larger community context." More about Dan Scully and Scully Architects
