Originally known as High Land and later as Burgdorff Siding, the town was renamed in 1897 after Alexander Ault, a local hero who saved the agricultural community from financial ruin by purchasing the entire grain harvest during a time of economic hardship. Ault was incorporated in 1904 and is located along a north-south segment of the Union Pacific Railroad, connecting Denver, Colorado, and Cheyenne, Wyoming.
