The Fergus Falls Human Rights Commission (HRC) works for the protection of human rights for all people, and helps empower people to realize their rights through education, advocacy and community engagement.
The Fergus Falls Human Rights Commission is committed to creating an inclusive community that values diversity and protects human rights for everyone.
We do this by:
- Conducting educational programming and distributing information in order to help people understand human rights and eliminate discriminatory practices.
- Advising government, businesses, and private individuals on human rights issues, concerns and complaints from the community.
- Informing and advising the Fergus Falls City Council on human rights concerns and complaints.
- Assuming the responsibility to pass on human rights concerns to the Minnesota Department of Human Rights.
Honoring Juneteenth
In 2023, Governor Walz officially established Juneteenth as a state holiday in Minnesota. Celebrated annually on June 19, Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and marks the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was made, to enforce the end of slavery. Juneteenth has long been a day of celebration, reflection, and education in African American communities. Traditions include parades, cookouts, music, storytelling, and gatherings that honor Black culture and history while recognizing the ongoing pursuit of racial justice. We invite all community members to learn more about this important day with resources from the Minnesota Historical Society :
